Skin Palette airbrush tanning tips! Find out what you need to do to prepare before your session, and how to take care of your glowing sunless tan!

Here are some Skin Palette airbrush tanning tips!

Preparation: The week of your session

Exfoliate! One of the most important things to do prior to airbrush tanning. Only use an abrasive exfoliate up to 3 days prior to your session as this will create abrasions that will interfere with the evenness of the application. Try Infinity Sun’s non-abrasive body polisher.

Keep your skin hydrated by moisturizing and drinking lots of water.

Preparation: The day of your session

Shower the morning of your airbrush tanning session

Shave (up to 6 hours before) or wax (up to 24 hours before)

DO NOT wear lotion, makeup, perfume or deodorant before your application as these act as barriers

It is recommended that you wear dark, loose-fitting clothing and flip-flops if possible. Tight clothing can rub the tan off in some areas. Avoid wearing socks after the session.

After your Appointment:

Please wait at least 8- 12 hours before showering. It is recommended to wait until the following morning before showering.

When showering, try to avoid taking excessively hot showers, scrubbing or exfoliating. Try to use your hand instead of a washcloth. Also, use a body wash or shower gel, these products contain less alkaline than regular bar soap. Pat dry with a towel, no rubbing.

Do not exercise after your appointment. Wait until the following day after your shower before perspiring.

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize after your post tan shower. Make sure the moisturizer is alcohol free. Moisturize daily thereafter and if possible twice daily. Hydrated skin is essential in maintaining a long lasting tan because it slows the process of natural skin exfoliation.

Do not swim. Hot tubs and swimming pools will fade your tan. If you must swim, use a waterproof sunscreen to help seal your sunless tan in.

Use the Infinity Sun aerosol to touch up the face, hands and feet between sessions.

Remember:

When you take your first shower you will see some color wash off. Don’t worry! This is merely just the cosmetic bronzer, not your tan washing off.

How Long Does A Spray Tan Last?

Skin naturally wants to shed its top layer on average every 7 days depending on the shape it’s in. The more hydrated and moisturized it is, the longer a tan will last. Typically a spray tan will last anywhere from 5-10 days. The better care you take of your skin, the better your spray tan will look, feel and last. Follow Skin Palette’s Tanning Tips for maximum results.

Custom Spray Tan VS. Booth Spray Tan?

Booth spray tans and custom spray tans are the most popular ways to get a full body spray tan. Spray tan booths usually spray your entire body in about 3 minutes. This is a quick way to obtain a tan, but the results are usually far from flawless. Booth sprays tans distribute the same amount of solution to each area of the body so there is no customization. Typically faces end up too dark and legs are not dark enough. Tiny, freckled looking spots are usually visible after a booth spray as well. We highly recommend spending a little extra money on a custom spray tan because the results can be drastic. A Skin Palette custom spray tan is the closest thing you can get to a flawless, natural-looking glow. Our extensively trained experts customize each spray to the client’s desire. Whether you are looking for a light, even looking, sun-kissed tone or want certain areas of your body darker than others to hide imperfections, we will customize each area of your body to your liking. We start every appointment with a full-body consultation that includes the option of muscle and shape contouring as well.

Can You Get a Suntan Through A Spray Tan?

Yes. You can tan your skin with UV rays through a spray tan. Spray tans do not act as sunscreen and offer no more protection than bare skin. Avoid indoor tanning beds and make sure you always wear sunscreen outdoors. Be sure to reapply every couple of hours as well.

Will You Still Burn In The Sun With A Spray Tan?

Yes. You can still burn in the sun even if you have a spray tan. Always wear sunscreen and reapply every couple of hours.

Will I Turn Orange After A Spray Tan?

We use the highest quality of spray tan solution available. Getting sprayed with lower quality products containing beta-carotene will result an orange-like color on the skin. Infinity Sun does not contain the beta-carotene compound and will never make your skin appear orange.

What Is DHA?

DHA is the active ingredient in the most effective sunless tanning products. DHA, also known as Dihydroxyacetone, is a three-carbon sugar that is derived from sugarcane. When DHA is applied to the skin, it causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the outermost layer, (dead skin cells), to change it’s color. This is what happens when UV rays hit the skin as well. Spray tanning however does this safely at a quicker/stronger rate without the damaging affects of UVA and UVB rays let off by the sun and indoor tanning beds.

Is Spray Tanning Safe?

Yes. Spray tanning is the safe alternative to indoor tanning and according to the Mayo Clinic; sunless tanning is a practical alternative to sunbathing. Since DHA works with the top layer of the skin, it is not absorbed through the skin – into the body and has no known toxicity. DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations and sunless tanning products since the 1960’s and has been listed with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973.

Is It Safe To Spray Tan While Pregnant?

Skin Palette recommends consulting with your physician prior to your airbrush tanning session. Since DHA sticks to the top layer of skin and isn’t absorbed past that, health care providers advise women to wait until the completion of the first trimester. Tanning beds are not safe for pregnant women because of the intense heat. Raised body temperatures can be very dangerous to the mother and the baby as well as too much sun exposure.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis, and it’s the most preventable cancer. Find out who's at risk, symptoms and how to reduce your risk of sun cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis, and it’s the most preventable cancer. Most skin cancer is caused by damage from the sun’s UV rays (ultraviolet radiation). This year, an estimated 68,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma—the most dangerous type of skin cancer—and nearly 12, 000 will die of the disease. Every year, as many as two million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer—either basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma.

Who's At Risk

Risk Reduction

Symptoms

People with fair skin or freckles, or skin that burns easily

People with personal or family histories of skin cancer

People with certain types of genetic problems that affect the skin

People who have been treated with radiation

People whose skin is damaged from injury or from long-term inflammation

People with HPV (human papillomavirus)

Men are more likely than women to get non-melanoma skin cancer. People who are white are more likely to develop melanoma than are African Americans. However, anyone with any skin color may develop skin cancer. The risk for skin cancer increases as people get older.

Avoid the sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm, and don’t use sun lamps or tanning beds.

Always use sunscreen and lip balm with UVB and UVA protection with SPF 30 or more, even on cloudy days.

Apply an ounce of sunscreen—a palm full—20 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours if in continuous sun.

Wear sunglasses that have been treated to absorb UV radiation, a wide brim hat, and clothing made of tightly woven material with long sleeves.

Protect children from the sun. Childhood sunburns may increase the risk of melanoma later in life.

Look at your skin once a month. Tell your health care professional about any changes.

Get the facts about DHA and what you need to know about DHA based sunless tanning.

DHA stands for Dihydroxyacetone. It is a simple carbohydrate- a sugar derivative from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane.

DHA in self tanner: When DHA is applied to the skin and left on for a period of time, it allows for an increase in pigment. The DHA attaches itself to the amino acids in the top/outer layer of your skin, also known as the epidermis, allowing for a healthy glow. Because we naturally shed thousands of dead skin cells each day, the tan will gradually fade.

DHA was first recognized as a skin coloring agent in the 1920’s by German scientists who were using it for X-ray purposes and spilled some on their skin. After no immediate cleansing, they noticed their skin was darker in the “soiled” areas.

Sunless tanning was created by a scientist from the University of Cincinnati, Eva Wittgenstein. Eva was studying an experiment of children being given DHA as an oral drug which would assist children with glycogen storage disease. The children would take large amounts at once and some would spit out. After a few times, Eva noticed the pigment in their skin becoming darker. She then continued to experiment with DHA and darkening her own skin…. Sunless tanning was then discovered!

*DHA-based sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, American Academy of Dermatology Association, Canadian Dermatology Association and the American Medical Association

In the 1970s, the Food and Drug Administration permanently added DHA to their list of approved cosmetic ingredients. DHA is NON-TOXIC and approved for external application to the human body.

The Hydration Station will protect and prolong the life and quality of your tan while providing an enjoyable, relaxing experience!

How Does the System Work?

The Hydration prolongs the life of the tan, and protects the skin from dehydration and poor skin tone. By deeply
hydrating the skin with oxygen and special nutrients, you promote a faster, deeper, browner tan.

Hydrofusion:

The simultaneous combination of steam and radiant heat creates “hydrofusion”- a powerful vortex of energy. Hydrofusion promotes an improvement in the appearance of tanned skin, enhanced color, moisturization and prolonged results of UV and sunless tanning sessions.

Steam:

Moist heat stimulates perspiration and dilates the pores of the skin, allowing for an improved absorption of products including accelerators, moisturizers, and Sunless tanning products. The steamy vapor acts like a “blanket” of moisture: enveloping the skin.

Radiant Heat:

Our body absorbs radiant heat every day in small doses in the form of sunlight. Hydration Station’s technology harnesses radiant heat energy, providing enhanced skin hydration, cleansing and supreme relaxation.

Oxygen Science Concentrates:

Liquid vitamins for the skin are infused with steam to moisturize the skin with special botanicals, minerals, and liquid vitamins for active skincare.

Learn more about Skin Palettes airbrushing tanning process and what to expect.

When you arrive at Skin Palette you will have a consultation with one of our technicians to help review your goals and help you decide exactly what color palette you are; from a healthy glow, to a light, medium, or dark tan. Then, assessing your natural skin color your technician will tell you if your goal is realistic or make a recommendation.

We will do our utmost to listen to your preferences. Next you will step into a private room and undress. You may wear disposable spa underwear, your own underwear or nothing at all. If you chose to wear your own undergarments or swim suit we recommend bringing something dark to ensure it will not become discolored by the spray.

Next your nails will be gently covered to prevent discoloration – if your hair is very light we will suggest your wear a shower cap. However we like to spray as close into the hairline as possible for a natural look.

You will stand on a towel and our technician will talk you through all the positions you will stand in so that we can tan you all over. We use our own equipment and our own self tanning solution formula. It takes just a couple of minutes to be sprayed and you will just feel a cool misting sensation. There is no need to be anxious about closing your eyes and holding your breath – when the time comes to spray your face the technician will tell you when to close your eyes and take breath – we will do everything possible to make the experience comfortable for you.

You will step into an adjoining private room to dry in front of a fan. After a couple of minutes you will be ready to put your clothes back on. For best results we recommend something slightly loose and dark – and preferably no jeans. In rainy weather bring boots and an umbrella! Then wait at least 8 hours to shower so that your beautiful tan will last at least 4-5 days, and up to over a week!
